The most common hair problems and how to fix them :
Dandruff
Dandruff is the most common hair problem. We have all had to deal with dandruff at some point. If dandruff is often confused with poor hygiene, the main causes are dry scalp, excess sebum and sensitivity to certain products.
There are 2 types of dandruff: dry and oily.
- Dry dandruff appears especially in winter, when dry weather and hot water absorb the natural oil from the scalp.
- Oily dandruff occurs when glands in the scalp secrete excess sebum which collects on the scalp along with dust and forms flakes.
Dandruff symptoms
- White flakes on hair and scalp: White flakes or scales are dead skin cells that are usually visible in hair or on shoulders and clothing.
- Itchy scalp: regular itching around the hairline or scalp.
- Dry scalp: A scalp without oil or much less oil is called a dry scalp. A feeling of dryness on the scalp is a common symptom of dandruff.
- Oily scalp and hair: Excess oil production in the scalp causes oily scalp and hair.
- Redness of the scalp: Due to continuous itching or irritation, the scalp turns red.
Tips to fight dandruff
- Hair mask: Use a hair mask for oily hair or hair with dandruff. Leave on for 20-30 minutes and rinse off with a mild or herbal shampoo. Repeat this at least once a week.
- Oil massage: Massaging the scalp with vegetable oils is very effective in treating dry dandruff. The oil helps to naturally moisturize the scalp and prevent dryness. You can use coconut oil, almond oil, tea tree oil, camphor oil, and neem oil to massage your scalp.
- Apple cider vinegar: is a quick fix to help relieve dandruff as it contains anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
- Apply a few drops on the scalp and massage for ten minutes.
Hair loss
Hair loss or alopecia is the most common hair problem in men, but also in women (female alopecia).
It is normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs per day. If you notice a sudden and noticeable increase in your daily hair loss, it’s time to look back on the last three to six months of your life.
Hair loss is caused by various factors, such as stress, hormonal imbalance and the use of unsuitable products. Once you find the cause of your hair loss, it will be easier for you to tackle the problem in the right way.
Tips to fight hair loss
- Be careful when combing and washing your hair.
- Include vitamins and minerals in your diet.
- Massage your scalp at least twice a week with vegetable oil for 30 minutes.
- Use natural hair products and care to avoid the harmful effects of chemicals.
- Do yoga or relaxation exercises to reduce stress levels and promote hair growth.
- Nourish your hair with a herbal hair mask.
- Protect your hair from UV rays and pollution.
You can prevent hair loss by adding protein-rich foods to your diet, using a mild shampoo, massaging your scalp with carrier oils, staying hydrated, and exercising regularly. It is also useful to banish chemical hair care.
Other most common hair problems :
Dry hair
If your hair is coarse, it needs protein. Fatty acids like vitamin B5, omega 3 and 6 can help replenish dry hair.
Tips to combat dry hair
- Scalp massage with natural oils: Massage your scalp with a natural or herbal oil to nourish your hair. You can use oil from any of these herbs: Vidarikand, Guduchi, Brahmi, Ashwagandha, and Shatavari.
- Nutrient-dense diet: Add nuts, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products to your diet to treat dry hair.
- Hair masks: Honey, fenugreek seeds, yogurt, banana, and aloe vera are some of the natural ingredients that you can use to make an effective hair mask.
- Chemical-free care: The chemicals in hair care products dry out the scalp and damage the hair.
In women, sometimes other underlying issues like menopause, birth control pills, pregnancy, or hormonal imbalance can be reflected in your hair texture. Anemia and hyperthyroidism can also cause dryness.
You should treat dry hair very carefully and gently. Try to mitigate the factors that weaken your hair, such as exposure to sunlight and chlorine, pollution, chemical treatments and heat sources such as hair dryers or straighteners.
Hair masks and oils can repair damage, soften the hair fiber, restore and make hair shiny and manageable. Cool showers and changing the way you dry your hair can also help prevent dryness. If you want to take omega-3 and vitamin supplements, check with your doctor.
Oily hair
Excessive production of sebum (natural oil) on the scalp makes the hair greasy.
Tips to fight oily hair
- Change your eating habits: avoid eating processed and fatty foods.
- Wash your hair properly: Wash your hair twice a week with a natural or herbal shampoo.
- Minimize use of styling products: Avoid using heavy styling products like wax and hair creams.
- Ayurvedic herbs: You can use herbs like Shikakai, Reetha, Triphala, and Kalonji to wash your hair.
- You can also treat oily hair by applying herbal hair mask like Kumari, Amla, Ganji, Henna and Thyme.
Brittle hair
When sebum from the scalp does not reach the ends of the hair, the hair tends to dry out and break over time. Split ends are a sign of damaged and brittle hair. Even though your hair is growing, you need to trim it regularly to keep it healthy.
Strands of hair have overlapping scales, and when these scales weaken, it causes hair breakage.
Tips to combat brittle hair
- Apply hair masks made with aloe vera, hibiscus flowers, honey, yogurt, or any other herb or natural product that conditions your hair and moisturizes it.
- Apply oil to the ends, you can minimize the appearance of split ends while nourishing them.
- Avoid brushing and washing your hair excessively, it can intensify split ends.
- Trim your hair regularly: Getting your hair trimmed regularly is a must to eliminate split ends and reduce hair breakage.
- Avoid excessive use of hair dryers or hair straighteners.
- Massage the scalp with castor oil to stimulate blood circulation at the root and nourish the hair.
